The Health and Medical Professions Preparation Program (HMP3) provides opportunities to undergraduates who plan to enter professional schools of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, public health, or physical therapy. All undergraduates interested in these careers are eligible to join.
HPMP gives you an inside look at the your desired profession. UCSD pairs undergraduate participants with health care professionals in their field of choice. Students gain invaluable experience designed to make them more competitive in the application process. Applications open in February, with the mentorship continuing to the end of school in June. Juniors and seniors receive priority, and the number of mentors is limited.
Pre-professional seminars provide insight into the health professions, to stimulate further exploration of the field, and to encourage thoughtful decision-making. Speakers include practicing health professionals in a variety of fields, medical school faculty, current medical students, and test preparation experts. HMP3 members will receive e-mail notification of upcoming seminars.
Peer discussions increase student awareness of important issues in the health professions. Participation will enhance your ability to give thoughtful, well-articulated answers during your professional school interview. Peer Discussion Leaders choose topics and moderate discussions on current literature, issues in the news, and policy decisions that affect health. HMP3 students are encouraged to bring and share thought-provoking articles on the topic of discussion. Attend at least 4 discussions during the academic year and earn a certificate of participation in scholarly healthcare discussions. Schedule and Topics are announced by e-mail.
Looking for long-term volunteer opportunities as a way to focus your professional goals and contribute to the community? Start by reviewing the binder of Volunteer Information Service listings in the HMP3 office (map). These descriptive listings provide local opportunities for involvement. Remember that admissions offices at health professions schools will look for evidence of your commitment to helping others.
