McNair Program Overview

The McNair Program helps low-income, first-generation college students and students from groups underrepresented in graduate education to prepare for doctoral study.

The 1-year program includes:

  • 2 quarters (10 hours per week) of academic research in the winter and spring quarters
  • An 8-week summer internship as a research assistant on a faculty mentor's project (a research stipend is provided)
  • Writing and presenting a research paper
  • Guidance in applying to graduate school and preparing for the Graduate Record Exam

You are eligible to apply if you:

  • Have at least a 3.0 grade point average (a lower GPA is acceptable under extenuating circumstances)
  • Have an interest in pursuing a Ph.D.
  • Have U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status
  • Have junior or senior class standing (all majors)
  • Are a first-generation college student who is low-income OR are Alaskan Native, American Indian, black, or Hispanic
