How to Apply for UC Summer Session Financial Aid

Find out how to apply for financial aid for summer sessions at UCSD or other UC campuses.

Meet eligibility requirements.

  • File your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).
Note: Summer financial aid awards are based on the FAFSA you submitted for this academic year.
Exception: For the Education Studies Graduate Program (EDS), financial aid awards are based on the FAFSA you filed for the upcoming academic year.
  • Always file your FAFSA by March 2 for financial aid priority consideration.
  • You must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements (PDF) for the current academic year.
  • You must not have completed your degree by the end of Spring Quarter.
  • Enroll in summer session classes. You must enroll in at least 8 quarter units or 6 semester units (at UC Berkeley or UC Merced) to receive financial aid.
    • To enroll at UCSD, use WebReg.
    • To enroll at another UC campus, use the registration process at that particular campus.

* Note: If you are academically disqualified after Spring Quarter and are denied an appeal, Academic Advising will cancel your Summer Session 2 courses. You will be billed for summer financial aid if the cancellation results in less than 8 units enrollment for Summer Session.

Apply for summer financial aid online.

Most students:

  • After you've enrolled in all the summer sessions you plan to take, apply for financial aid online (only once) using the Financial Aid tool on TritonLink. You can apply starting in mid-April, and should apply by May 15 to ensure funds are available before your summer fees are due.

Education Studies Graduate Students who plan on attending Summer 2012:

If you wish to apply for UCSD Graduate Grant funds as well as Federal Direct Loan funds for summer 2012 enrollment at UC San Diego, follow the instructions below:

  • Step 1: First, file your 2012-2013 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 2, 2012, if you want to be considered for UCSD graduate summer grant aid and federal direct loans.
  • Step 2: Complete the EDS Graduate Student Summer 2012 Financial Aid Request as early as possible to allow for processing time. The deadline is May 1, 2012.
  • Step 3: Check your @UCSD e-mail address often. After you file the 2012/2013 FAFSA, complete the EDS Graduate Student Summer 2012 Financial Aid Request, and enroll in summer courses, your financial aid eligibility will then be determined.  An e-mail notification will be sent to your @UCSD e-mail address directing you to check TritonLink to view your official summer awards. Summer awarding will begin mid- to late June.

Pay your Summer Session fees on time.

  • If you've enrolled in Summer Session at UCSD and met all the requirements, UCSD electronically deposits financial aid funds to your student account. Read more about how you get your financial aid and additional notes about Summer Session disbursement.
  • If you've enrolled in summer sessions at another UC campus and met all requirements, financial aid funds are either electronically deposited to your bank account or a check is processed and sent to your permanent address. In this case, you are responsible to pay your fees on time at that campus.
  • If you haven't met the May 15 application deadline, you must pay Summer Session and any associated late fees from your own resources.
    • You may be partially or fully reimbursed after your application is processed.
    • If you don't pay your fees by the Summer Session payment deadlines, you'll be dropped from your classes.
    • If you drop a summer class, you may lose some or all of your financial aid award and may have to repay money you've already received.
