Welcome to UC San Diego!
As the coordinator of UCSD's Chicano(a)/ Latino(a) Arts & Humanities (CLAH) Minor Program, I would like to welcome you on behalf of our campus' Chicano(a)/ Latino(a) community and thank you for choosing UC San Diego.
All of us — Chicano(a)/ Latino(a) alumni, faculty, staff, students and the UCSD campus — wish the best for you. We want you to make the most of what UCSD and the San Diego community have to offer.
We have a great number of resources that can contribute to your academic achievement and ensure that you maximize your postgraduate options — graduate school, law school, medical school, or employment.
In addition to your academic success, we want you to enjoy your years at UCSD. Hopefully you will become a true scholar by learning about yourself as a Chicano(a)/ Latino(a), your history, and your community. Likewise, that you will develop a critical social consciousness that will spark your ability to create positive change in the world. These are the educational outcomes suitable for college graduates in our increasingly diverse and global society.
Compared to your high school or community college, you might have noticed that there are fewer Raza students at UCSD. We know that for some, this might pose additional challenges to starting a new experience and surviving academically.
However, there are a number of student organizations, staff, and faculty who are extremely committed and determined to expand the Chicano(a)/ Latino(a) presence and ensure that our community is reflected in all aspects of the university.
From our personal experience, observations, and studies of the many Chicano(a)/ Latino(a) students who are successful at UCSD, becoming involved, developing supportive networks of peers and mentors, and giving back to the community are essential. That is why we encourage you to take full advantage of these resources listed here and others that you encounter as you learn to navigate UCSD.
I encourage you to contact me so that I can be of assistance. Also, please contact the individuals, organizations, and offices in the pages of this resource guide. We are all dedicated to supporting students like you, and committed to seeing you successfully graduate from UCSD.
¡Mis mejores deseos para un año escolar lleno de exito y satisfacción!
