Espoir Kyubwa – Awarded Gilliam Fellowship for Advanced Study by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). As violence from a brutal conflict in Rwanda spilled into Zaire in 1995 and rebel soldiers made their way toward their village, nine-year-old Espoir Kyubwa, his mother, and brother fled to a refugee camp in Burundi.
