California State Veterans Benefits

California offers one state education benefits program for eligible veterans and their families — the College Fee Waiver.

UCSD does not determine your eligibility for the Cal Vet College Fee Waiver.  Apply through your local California county Veterans Service Office. It will guide you through the process and notify UCSD of your eligibility.

In addition to this California state benefit, be sure to read about federal veterans education benefits available through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

For additional details, online applications, and forms, contact the California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet).

California College Fee Waiver

What it is:

The California Veterans College Fee Waiver provides for a waiver of mandatory tuition and student-services fees for UC matriculated students who qualify for this benefit. You must be a California resident to receive the California Veterans College Fee Waiver.

The benefit does not cover:

  • Non-resident supplemental tuition
  • Campus-based fees
  • Per-unit charges of any self-supporting degree program
  • Housing, books, or health insurance costs

The waiver can be used during UCSD Summer Sessions and will apply to per-unit course fees only.

How to apply:

  • Download the college fee waiver application from the California Department of Veterans Affairs.
  • Submit the application and all required supporting documents to your county Veterans Service Office (VSO).
  • Most county offices send a copy of your authorization letter directly to UCSD, or you can mail or fax your authorization letter to UCSD's Registrar's Office:
9500 Gilman Drive, Mail Code 0022
    La Jolla, CA 92093-0022
    Fax: (858) 534-5723
  • Your tuition and student-services fees are waived upon receipt of the authorization letter.
  • Make sure you pay all other fees directly or your classes will be canceled.
