Discover the Law

Discover the Law is a preventive legal education program designed to equip students with legal life skills and empower them to make informed legal decisions.

Participants who attend a minimum of 4 workshops throughout the quarter earn a certificate of achievement. Participants who complete 8 workshops receive a certificate of special recognition which can be added to your Co-Curricular Record. This program is not offered for academic credit. 

 

How to participate:

  1. Register online by completing this Google Form.
  2. Join the Discover the Law Google Classroom (class code: hqvr7t3) using your UCSD email account.
  3. Check out the workshop calendar to plan which workshops fit your schedule and spark an interest.
  4. Attend the minimum number of workshops needed for the certificate you want to achieve
    • Attend at least four and up to seven workshops to receive a Certificate of Achievement, or
    • Attend at least eight workshops to receive a Certificate of Special Recognition and receive validation on your Co-Curricular Record
  5. At the end of Winter Quarter 2024 you will be emailed a post-program questionnaire. You will receive your Certificate of Achievement or Certificate of Special Recognition upon receipt of your completing the post-program questionnaire. 

 

 FAQ:

 Q: Which platform are we using for Discover the Law workshops?

A: We are using Zoom to deliver the workshops most workshops. Students are encouraged to activate their Zoom accounts via their UCSD email to be able to register for each virtual Discover the Law workshop. The eight workshops offered during Cram Saturdays, four workshops on January 20, 2024 and four workshops on March 2, 2024, are in-person and do not require pre-registration. Simply show up to Pepper Canyon Hall Room 106 for any of the Cram Saturday workshops you are interested in. 

 

Q: I filled out the Pre-Program Questionnaire online but it didn't ask me which workshops I wanted to attend. Do I have to register for each workshop separately? 

A: Yes, you will need to register for the majority of workshops you wish to attend separately. You can find the workshop Zoom registration links in the Discover the Law Google Classroom. However, the eight workshops offered during Cram Saturdays, four workshops on January 20, 2024 and four workshops on March 2, 2024, are in-person and do not require pre-registration. Q:  Do I have to complete the program requirements within the quarter?

A: Yes, Discover the Law is only offered in the Winter Quarter. Only workshops attended in Winter Quarter 2024 will count towards a Certificate of Achievement or Certificate of Special Recognition. 

 

Q: How should I keep track of my workshop attendance since it is now virtual?

A: Participants present for the entire duration of the Discover the Law workshop will receive an email confirmation of their workshop attendance within two business days. 

 

Q: Do I have to attend the workshops in real-time, i.e., synchronously? 

A: Yes, to receive credit for attending a workshop, workshops need to be attended live (synchronously) either through Zoom or live-in person on a Cram Saturday. However, we intend to record at least one of every workshop offered and post it in the Google Classroom for educational purposes.

 

Q: I can't attend a specific workshop but would like access to the materials. Can you email it to me?

A: Good news! All slides and handouts for all workshops led by SLS attorneys will be available by the time of the workshop within the Google Classroom Drive folder. We also intend to record at least one of every workshop offered and post in the Google Classroom for educational purposes.
