The Center for Student Involvement's Community Service Area, in conjunction with the UC San Diego Bookstore and One Stop, is proud to present the UCSD Cares Campaign. The campaign strives to raise awareness and inspire action for local, national, and global social issues.

We are a community service campaign bringing together different organizations (students, staff, faculty, alumni, and non-profit) to promote philanthropic awareness and create a unified community which truly shows that UC San Diego cares.

UCSD Cares Week - May 5-9, 2014

All Week: "Tools for Schools" Drive

Time: Business hours, May 5–9
Location: UCSD Bookstore, Goody's Market and John's Market
Sponsored by: UCSD Bookstore, EducationCorps, and UCSD Center for Student Involvement—Community Service

(1)   Receive 20% off school supplies from the UCSD Bookstore to benefit “Tools for Schools”
This is how it works: Between May 5–9, shop the UCSD Bookstore supply department located on the second floor. Bring your school supplies to any register. When you tell the cashier you will be dropping them off in a “Tools for Schools” collection box on your way out – you’ll receive a 20% discount. Donation boxes are located at the first floor entrance, second floor entrance, Imprints/Perks entrance, and Library Walk entrance. The boxes will be brightly decorated with red and white stripes, and marked with “Tools for Schools” signage. (Note: 20% discount applies only to school supplies that will be donated to Tools for Schools, and the customer must tell the cashier before the transaction begins.)

(2)   Donate your change to benefit “Tools for Schools”
Between May 5-9, the UCSD Bookstore will collect change at the Perks and Customer Service counters – both located on the first floor, inside the UCSD Bookstore. At the end of UCSD Cares Week, all donated change will be used to purchase additional school supplies for the “Tools for Schools” beneficiaries.

(3)   Donate school supplies at Goody's or John's
Additional collection boxes will be located outside Goody's Place and Market (in Marshall College) and John's Place and Market (inside Muir College) from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM, May 5-8.

All school supplies collected to benefit the “Tools for Schools” drive will be donated directly to classrooms of the following San Diego schools: McGill Elementary School of Success, Linda Vista Elementary, Kit Carson Elementary, Bell Middle School, E3 Civic High School, Serra High School, John Muir K-12, King Chavez, The Preuss School, Farb Middle School, Mission Bay High School, Bethune K-8 School.

Did you know that San Diego County welcomes approximately 3,500 refugees every year? This fact is unknown to many UC San Diego students and many more are unaware of what classifies a person as a refugee or the numerous healthcare challenges they face upon arrival. In order to spread UCSD community awareness, Dr. Kate Murray, Department of Family and Preventive Medicine, and Sixth College's CAT 124 Refugee Resettlement Practicum have collaborated with Catholic Charities Diocese of San Diego to educate all of us about this ongoing international situation.

Join us for a viewing of Urban Refugees in Uganda, a documentary film by Sedrick Ntwali, followed by a discussion panel with students and community members involved in refugee resettlement. We will be learning about and discussing refugee health issues and ways that UC San Diego students can become more involved in helping address this social issue.
