Health insurance is required for all undergraduate, graduate, and professional students as a non-academic condition of enrollment.
All students paying full registration fees to UCSD are automatically enrolled into the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) as part of the enrollment process each quarter (fall, winter, and spring). Students who are enrolled in SHIP for spring quarter have continued coverage during the summer, up to the start of SHIP for fall quarter.
- Worldwide coverage year-round for a moderate premium and low annual deductible.
- Premiums that are automatically assessed as part of registration fees each quarter.
- Many no-cost services at Student Health Services (SHS) to students enrolled in the plan.
Students currently covered by an insurance plan may qualify for a health fee waiver. To apply for the health fee waiver, students must submit an online waiver application by the applicable deadline. See How to Waive SHIP
at the SHS website for more information. If your insurance plan does not meet the university's minimum requirements you are not eligible for a waiver and are required to have SHIP. Students who are eligible for the waiver but do not submit a waiver by the appropriate deadline will be automatically enrolled in SHIP.
