Diversity

Learn how the Center for Ethics and Spirituality approaches diversity in the spirit of civic pluralism.

CES tree logoUC San Diego does not establish any religion or non-religion and seeks to provide free exercise for people of all religions and no religion on campus. This is consistent with the First Amendment to the United States Constitution and the university's status as a public land-grant institution.

The Center for Ethics and Spirituality (CES) aims to assist UC San Diego students, faculty, and staff in promoting a pluralism of worldviews. Insofar as it assists in achieving this aim, we affirm the spirit of the Principles of Community.

CES also embraces an adapted form of the Cross-Cultural Center's P.L.A.C.E.S. Philosophy.

  • We promote respectful dialogue among people of differing worldview identities.
  • We lead by example within our families and friend groups, campus and spiritual communities, and beyond.
  • We affirm each and every human being as inherently worthy of dignity while on her or his spiritual journey.
  • We community-build through programs that create new connections, strengthen existing relationships, and encourage cross collaborations.
  • We empower others to take personal ownership of their spiritual well-being while better understanding those with different worldviews.
  • We have a social justice lens that includes a vision of society in which the distribution of resources is equitable regardless of religious affiliation or lack thereof, and all members are safe and free to live their beliefs privately and publicly. We envision a society in which each person is able to develop their full spiritual capacities and capable of interacting with others in a pluralistic society.
