Privacy Details: How to Protect Your Student Info

My Privacy Details in TSS allows privacy blocks to be placed on specific categories of student information.

Student records are protected by UC San Diego policy and federal privacy law, including FERPA, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. Under FERPA, some student information may be treated as directory information and may be released unless a privacy block is placed on the information.

My Privacy Details provides a way to review and manage how certain categories of student information may be released, and helps UC San Diego identify when additional care is needed before information is shared.

A privacy block restricts UC San Diego from releasing the selected category of information.

  • A selected checkbox means the privacy block is active.
  • An unselected checkbox means the privacy block is not active.

Some privacy blocks can be updated directly in TSS. Other privacy blocks are view-only and require assistance from Academic Records in the Office of the Registrar.

Be Aware Before Getting Started

Privacy blocks may affect how UC San Diego responds to requests for student information, including enrollment verification, degree verification, employment checks, scholarships, security clearances, benefits, or student discounts.

Important note: A privacy block does not guarantee that information will never be disclosed. Information may still be released when permitted via student consent, university policy, or applicable law. See the Notification of Rights Under FERPA for Postsecondary Institutions for details.

How to Review & Update Privacy Blocks

Step 1 - Open My Privacy Details

Within TSS, select My Privacy Details, located in the TSS Apps - Main Campus section.

The view-only blocks may significantly affect student verification or UC San Diego’s ability to confirm student information to a third party. Contact Academic Records at academicrecords@ucsd.edu for assistance placing or removing these blocks.
